Already on the public’s radar before their first self-titled EP release, psych-rock act The Darts are certainly a force to be reckoned with. Stemming from both Phoenix and Los Angeles, the quartet’s desert psych sound digs up influences from Austin’s The Black Angels as well as honing in on the sounds of 60’s girl-pop groups with a grittier edge. Comprised of members Nicole Laurenne (The Love Me Nots, Motobunny), Rikki Styxx (The Dollyrots), Christina Nunez (The Love Me Nots) and Michelle Balderrama (Brainspoon), their multi-talents and cohesiveness has gained them notoriety prior to their initial EP release in the fall of 2016 to their latest album, Me. Ow, released last Friday off Dirty Water Records. The Darts have toured throughout the states and Europe, gaining admiration from Jello Biafra and Stephen King as well as celebrated from The Phoenix New Times as the Best Local Band of 2017.
Asserted with rambunctious energy, The Darts’ single for “The Cat’s Meow” plays with Super 8 footage (from Kevin T. Miller) combining live footage and frisky feline masks, giving a playful spirit to their track. Fueled by a pulsing organ and reminiscent of The Cramps if they were entirely female-fronted, Me. Ow‘s 12 tracks of fuzzy garage-rock anthems are solidified yet contain enough creative exploration to carve their own musical niche and fare with some unexpected aural treats. You can purchase their latest LP and various merch from their online store here. The Darts are ending their fall tour with a blowout show in Phoenix tomorrow night at Valley Bar and are taking over our Instagram feed!
