Artists On Our Radar: Marlene Juliane Schindler Instagram Takeover
With such a plethora of social media content and artists to sift through online, we were stoked to come across Marlene Juliane Schindler‘s drawings and artwork on Instagram. Strikingly honest in her portrayal of beauty and bodies, her figures’ expressions exude uncompromising intimacy with each piece of art telling their own story. We had a short chat with her about how she got started with her illustrations and her thoughts on beauty in the giant scope of online media. Be sure to follow us on Instagram today for her takeover and sharing of her art work on @anonmag. ANON: What first prompted you to start making illustrations? Can…
Thrive Presents: Surviving the Holidays with Your Relatives
Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. The year is winding down and we are all exhausted, partied out (or still partying), and thinking about new beginnings. We’re also reflecting on the year — accomplishments, disappointments, regrets. In short, it’s a tough time of year and nothing makes it tougher than hanging out with distant relatives who feel the need to give you advice on “life.” We’ve all seen the memes, we can all relate to the onslaught of questions from people we only see once or twice or year. “When are you getting married?” “Do you have a boyfriend?” “When are you…
Dear Thrive: Best Advice I Ever Got
Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. This week I am taking a moment to reflect on the best advice I’ve ever received and share that with all of you here on THRIVE. When I was in the 7th grade I had an English teacher that we all called Ms. J. Ms. J was beloved by a lot of students because of her ability to be fun and high energy, while also very tough. She was a classic “Oh Captain, My Captain” type. Sometime during our very first week of classes, our very first week of middle school, the very first time we…
Dear Thrive: How Do I Explain My Work to New Friends?
Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. Dear Thrive: Once upon a time I was really into photography, but then I stopped for a whole bunch of different reasons, mostly related to a day job. I want to get back into it but it has been YEARS and most of my new friends don’t know me as an “artist”. Do I pick this up again without explaining to them? Can I hide it from them until I am good again? Ugh, help. –Snapless Dear Snapless, First things first… Take a deep breath! We are all so quick to beat ourselves…
Dear Thrive: How Do I Compete on Social Media?
Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. Dear Thrive, I think I create pretty decent work (I draw) but I don’t have many followers on Instagram. How much does this matter and how do I increase my follower number? Am I delusional about my work? –Slow to Grow Dear Slow to Grow, It’s so easy to let your follower account affect how you feel about your work. If you’re a creative and you’re posting your work on Instagram or Facebook, it’s almost impossible not to feel down if your count is down. We all go there and probably more often than…
Short Story: After Egg by E.S. Sparks
After Egg By E. S. Sparks ( Instagram ) Inquiries: erica.s.sparks@gmail.com The young woman met her friend at 2:15 for brunch. She would only be in New York for the long weekend and wanted to make the most of it, see everyone. Miriam had been gently urging her to visit and she wanted to please her friend and it was the city after all. Though she liked to sleep in all days of the week, especially on vacation, the young woman did not like to “brunch,” fashionable as it was. She found the word itself disagreeable— too many consonants —and to say it felt as if she were…

Photography: Cyril Ely & Anatoly Pavlov
Artists: Cyril Ely ( Instagram ) & Anatoly Pavlov ( Instagram ) TV was created as a way of delivering a visual signal, but it turned into an instrument for mind manipulating. TV broadcast footage filmed on long exposure is an metaphysical space of impaired information where the sum of its parts is not forming the whole. A diversified flow of movies and programs from different channels leads to desintegration of the viewer’s focus when you can watch for a long time but don’t actually see or remember anything. A random sequence of TV channels’ footage is a metaphor for the mindless consumption born by the broadcasting format overloaded…

Photographer: Irene Tondelli ( Instagram ) I am a documentary and travel photographer based in Northern Italy. I also work as an art director in the field of interior design. In the last few years I worked in advertising agencies but I am now focusing on photography, my true love. Taking pictures helps me to investigate my intimate relationship with places, like an inner dialogue that takes shape through images. I am interested in the relation between spaces and the people who live in them. The human figure rarely appears in my pictures. I find documenting the passage of people more interesting than their physical presence. I like the…

Dead Meadow Takeover!
Website || Facebook || Instagram Initially forming nearly two decades ago by guitarist and vocalist Jason Simon, Dead Meadow fuses psychedelic soundscapes with fuzzy rock and drone meditations to make for a transcendent aural experience. Drawing influences from classic acts like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the three piece take things a step further by incorporating their own musical forces into the mix. Their self-titled album, released in 2000 on Joe Lally (of Fugazi)’s label Tolotta Records, was followed a year later by Howls from the Hills. Post-completion, the band recorded a Peel Session in Fugazi’s home studio, marking the first time a Peel Session was recorded outside the…
Artists On Our Radar: Joe Gallagher
Artist: Joe Gallagher Originally from Tacoma, Washington, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Joe Gallagher’s perspective on the shift from the pace of living from the West coast to the East coast is depicted in his vibrant and colorful paintings. Containing disproportionate and excessive features, Gallagher’s contemporary style of overlapping characters represents individuals who live and thrive together despite their differing backgrounds. Each face and feature remains distinct and unique, and although some characters may seem to fade in the background while others jump to our attention, they are all universally interconnected and affect the direction that our lives will inevitably take. Gallagher draws inspiration from dream interpretation…
Jazz in the Spotlight with Brooklyn’s A Tree Grows
Photo by Amber Gress One of the most fascinating things about music as an artform is its ability to touch and inspire the soul of so many that it can unite a community around it. It is the hearth of a community, so to speak, giving hope and reflection in a society cluttered with noise and information overload. Just like the Brooklyn rock explosion that occurred several years ago, jazz in this legendary corner of NYC has been undergoing a renaissance. With Manhattan being overly expensive these days and artists finding it harder to find gigs there, Brooklyn has come to play a vital role in the city’s larger…

Mixtape Monday: Team Love Records Takeover
Embracing a carefully crafted roster of acts, Team Love Records remains continuously passionate for showcasing groundbreaking musicians and carving a physical space for music and art in an increasingly cyber world. Founded by Nate Krenkel and Conor Oberst in 2003, Team Love Records has since expanded into a tightly knit crew including staff members Rebecca, Matt and Autumn. The record label’s formation was ignited by Oberst’s frustrations at not being able to spotlight upcoming talent quickly enough on Saddle Creek Records, where his own Bright Eyes’ albums were released. Team Love’s first release was on June 22nd, 2004 with Tilly and the Wall’s album, Wild Like Children, followed by…

A Daydream From Another Planet: River Jones’ Official Music Video For “Pure”
Collaborative chance encounters are always thriving in the city of Austin, Texas. Back in June, River Jones partnered with local indie pop band Tele Novella for a music video shoot they had scheduled and just so happened to meet Lorelei Linklater, director Richard Linklater’s daughter. Both Jones and Linklater spent the day decked out in blue makeup and alien costumes and the two artists stuck up an undeniable friendship. During a road trip to Dallas singing along to Elliott Smith, the duo decided to collaborate on Jones’ music video for “Pure”, a track he had written days before meeting Lorelei. Within a week the video was recorded and features…
Objects to Desire
Objects To Desire // the lesser said, the better. Photos : Suryakant Sawhney Directed / Edited : Surabhi Tandon “Objects to Desire” arose out of many different conversations and a couple of challenging attempts to shoot with film. But the longer it took, the clearer the vision became. Of course, meeting some really interesting people with who these collaborations were born have been integral, too. I’ve been shooting video and photos at work for a few years now, and both of those have been embedded in a documentary format. Delving into this came out of an attempt to create fiction amidst the rush of real life. Especially in a…
Scatter Factory LP Blends Motorik Electronica With Ambient Bliss
When I first heard the name Scatter Factory, the thought that immediately popped into my head is something or someone churning out produce in an uncoordinated not well-thought- out manner. However, the debut album from Scatter Factory (real name Will Foster) is anything but that – it’s calculated, intentional, sincere, and meticulously constructed (like blocks made of different high quality materials). It’s ironic that the lead track from this album should be named ‘Out The Blocks’, but there you have it. Scatter Factory by Scatter Factory Scatter Factory also gives the association of seeds being scattered to the wind. In this case, sonic seeds that have, thanks…

Deerhoof Takeover!
Spanning over twenty years and 13 studio albums, Deerhoof is one of those rare bands that are constantly embarking on musical leaps and bounds, exploring musical terrain that has yet to be uncovered while simultaneously constructing their own niche of avant-garde noise pop. Comprised of vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki, guitarists’ John Dieterich and Ed Rodríguez, and long-standing drummer from 1994 Greg Saunier, the quartet are seriously dedicated to their constant flux of musical experimentation. Their long-standing fans along with those that are discovering Deerhoof for the first time immediately recognize the band’s commitment to sticking with what they do best — “I think it resonates that we just keep on…

Virgins
Ransom Ashley’s new body of work entitled “Virgins” captures the emotional happenings of teenagehood while coming of age in small town Louisiana. The photographer infuses an almost cinematic quality into his work as he explores the relevance of both isolation and identity within the teenage experience. Featuring his closest friends and family throughout the series, Ashley claims to have found his main source of inspiration within his own experiences as he allowed the memories and psychological currents of his adolescence to finally have their moment within his timelessly colorful and nostalgic photographs. Born in Shreveport, LA , Ransom Ashley is a photographer, actor, and cinematographer. He attended Parsons The…
Summer Rain
Photographer: Alina Autumn ( Instagram ) Alina Autumn is a creative photographer based in Russia. She thrives on creating tragic, sensual and feminine images, with the intention of leaving the viewer with a small story. She is inspired by the natural beauty of people, nature, cinema, lighting, color, and all things vintage. Her most recent series was born by chance — together with model Anna, the two were struck by the beauty of blossoming trees after a heavy rainfall. Wet her, raindrops, and the muffled colors influenced what was to become “Summer Rain”.
Half Waif Takeover!
It seems that everything Half Waif encompasses, they do so wholeheartedly and with utmost intimacy. Brooklyn-based project Half Waif, the musical vision of Nandi Rose Plunkett, released her debut LP KOTEKAN in 2014, followed by her sophomore release Probable Depths this past May via DZ Tapes. Plunkett’s heritage stems from a conglomeration of Indian/Irish/Swiss/American background, thus drawing inspiration for the choice of her band’s name – “it was that fractured feeling of belonging to everywhere and nowhere all at once”. While recording Probable Depths, Plunkett and her producer Zubin Hensler visited her childhood house in Williamstown, MA, to sample the creaks and clanks inherent within the rooms and the…

Bands On Our Radar: Paper Spook
Just like kicking back with your old friend, Berlin-based duo Paper Spook like to indulge in cheap wine, fatty tofu burgers, and lots of terrible guilty pleasure TV shows. The band started playing together in 2015 and have already landed themselves a second EP entitled “Teenage Nightmare”, set to be released both digitally and on cassette tape off Wiener Records later this summer. Vocalist Juju Lund and guitarist David Nilles incorporate lo-fi drum machine beats with 70’s garage punk swagger and 60’s bubblegum-pop guitar riffs. They cite influences from The New York Dolls to Blondie and garner inspiration from their city’s ever incessant electronic vibes. Their newest single, “I Wanna…

Bands On Our Radar: The Two Lips
There’s been an influx of some extremely talented, up and coming bands pouring in from San Marcos, Texas. Fuzz garage-rock trio The Two Lips caught our eyes (and ears) after witnessing their work with Spoon’s very own Britt Daniels for their new single, “Repeat”. The opportunity arose during this year’s SXSW Festival where they had the opportunity to be mentored by and discuss ideas with Daniels and record a track in Converse Rubber Tracks’ professional recording studio. Take a look at the band’s experience captured on video below. [embedyt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izP4yg8PShY[/embedyt] Facebook || Instagram || Twitter

Bands On Our Radar: Muff’s “East Side Love”
Welcome to the world of Muff, consisting of four pals that play catchy fuzz pop tunes together. Muff was first discovered at a house party in San Marcos, TX, back in 2014. The band has gained enormous strides since, releasing “An EP” recorded by Mich White of dogfight! recs in 2015, and recently released their self-titled album recorded by Dan Holmes at The Soup Kitchen. The band’s music video for “East Side Love” is a scene-by-scene visual representation of Muff’s nostalgic 90’s sound combined with fuzzy guitars and melodic riffs, not to mention the cohesiveness between all four members of the band. Muff’s weaknesses are pizza and pad thai…
