No Joy Instagram Takeover
Facebook || Twitter || Instagram || Bandcamp Often we tend to get caught up in the comfort of knowing just what to expect from a band, whether with their live performance or with forthcoming albums. No Joy is a band that has managed to pleasantly surprise their audience since their inception in 2009 to nearly a decade later. Founded by Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd, the two started No Joy from online correspondence between Los Angeles and Montreal, with White-Gluz returning to Canada to see the project to fruition. Melding fuzzy and atmospheric shoegaze elements with brooding and haunting qualities, the band has since received praiseworthy reviews and garnered…
Jennie Vee Takeover
Photographer: Corinne Schiavone Facebook || Instagram || Twitter Seamlessly combining the melancholic and gritty with the dreamy and wistful, LA-based artist Jennie Vee is on ANON Magazine’s radar this week. Growing up in small town Ontario, Vee had an affinity for dark, post-punk acts like The Cure and Joy Division. Moving from Canada to England, Nashville and New York, Vee settled into the city to record her debut album, Spying, and play solo gigs. Establishing significant connections with visual artist Katrin Albert and Grammy award winning producer Chris Lord-Alge, she also spent the spring of 2015 playing bass with Courtney Love on the Endless Summer Tour with Lana Del…
Dead Meadow Takeover!
Website || Facebook || Instagram Initially forming nearly two decades ago by guitarist and vocalist Jason Simon, Dead Meadow fuses psychedelic soundscapes with fuzzy rock and drone meditations to make for a transcendent aural experience. Drawing influences from classic acts like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the three piece take things a step further by incorporating their own musical forces into the mix. Their self-titled album, released in 2000 on Joe Lally (of Fugazi)’s label Tolotta Records, was followed a year later by Howls from the Hills. Post-completion, the band recorded a Peel Session in Fugazi’s home studio, marking the first time a Peel Session was recorded outside the…
Artists on Our Radar: Shanna Teresinski
Artist: Shanna Teresinski ( Instagram ) Shanna Teresinski was born in Austin, TX and immersed herself in her own creative endeavors and art rather than training at school. Her inspiration comes from those closest to her and capturing the subconscious into a tangible vision. To Teresinski, sometimes pictures and art are the means to best express her ideas rather than by words. For those of you in Austin, you can see and purchase more of her work at Buenos Aires Cafe on E 6th St. She also plays in a synth pop act by the name of Obsolete Machines.
Never Like Tuesdays // Femme
Artist: Juliette Hayt ( Instagram ) Juliette Hayt is a painter, illustrator and writer based in New York City. Her art is extremely diaristic and draws inspiration from her feelings of anxiety, love, sadness, longing and abandonment. Hayt’s series for “Never Like Tuesdays” explores mental and emotional states through the use of the color yellow. Relating yellow to the universal color of happiness, Hayt’s paintings use yellow as a way for her to comprehend the definition of happiness. As a painter, she questions if it’s possible to impose a visceral reaction upon the view that suggests distress while using yellow, and using color to manipulate its meaning in a way…

Invisible Theatre
Photographer: Tim Gao ( Instagram ) Street photography is not just a sharp triggering of shutter to shape the outside world in the form of light and shadow. It is simultaneously a curious observation and emotional perception of what’s happening in the ordinary streets at any moment when unpredictable dramas and realities are actually taking place. I have lived in Shanghai for over nine years and I explore Shanghai, where urban city and residential lanes are hidden and unknown to me and impact my emotional attachment to the city. Street photography not only enables me to create a documentary view of the unique Shanghai street and the culture behind…

Shana Falana Takeover!
Spanning across the last twenty years, Shana Falana started in 1995 out of the DIY scene in San Francisco. Eight years later, Falana left California to move to New York to pursue her own music career in the Brooklyn music scene. Upon meeting drummer Mike Amari over their mutual love for Bauhaus, the visionary powerhouse duo set off on tour shortly after. With the release of their 2015 album off Team Love Records, Set Your Lightning Fire Free, Falana ingeniously crafts a record filled with ten uplifting and experimental tracks. As the album title suggests, Falana tears down preconceived notions of any so-called rules while making this album,…
Andrew W.K. Takeover!
Photo by Roe Ethridge When you hear the name Andrew W.K., it’s near impossible not to have your spirits lifted and positive feelings evoked. Born in 1979, Andrew started his musical career at an early age, learning the piano when he was four, and inevitably continuing on the road to world-wide rock ‘n’ roll stardom. Andrew combines performance art, music, writing, and lectures to conjure feelings of confidence in his motivational speeches. Despite his seemingly party 24/7 persona, Andrew is also very upfront and honest about his struggles with depression. When asked how his conflicting spirited demeanor and inner demons work together, Andrew asserts that “[t]he whole idea of…

Drab Majesty Takeover!
Going by the persona of Deb Demure, Drab Majesty is an infusion of dark wave mystery and shoegaze ethereality. Based in Los Angeles, Drab Majesty recently released her/his latest album, Careless, on Dais Records in June of this year. Andrew Clinco created Drab Majesty’s overall aesthetic and character in 2012, freeing the audience and her/himself of any specific gender, instead encouraging listeners to look past the duality of gender and focus on the experience. Deb Demure infuses aspects of dreamy soundscapes with somber and introspective visual elements to her/his music videos, a blend of new-wave similarities from The Cure and Joy Division with visual elements comparable to David Lynch’s…
Cautiontape Takeover!
Austin, Texas’ Cautiontape is comprised of vocalist and songwriter Britani Woods (previously of Petals), Jason Garcia on keyboards and vocals (Household Names), drummer Asher Alexander and bassist Matt Bell-Roberts. Their sound can best be described as upbeat pop licks and danceable electronica to make for one bright and vivacious band. Reminiscent of musical acts like Metric and a throwback to bands such as The Cardigans and The Cars, Cautiontape boasts an infectious sound with ultra striking pop melodies. When it comes to making decisions on the direction of their music, Brit says, “[w]e always know when we’ve done a good take of something because Asher yells “YEAH!!!!” from the…
Three Bones Takeover!
Based out of Austin, TX, Three Bones can best be described as having “the principal of swampy grit and phenomenal songwriting, Victoria [de Benedicty]’s voice will make you strong, it will heal your wounds. The immeasurable feel of this group will have you kneeling at their church of soul.” A Finalist Winner of The John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2015, Three Bones has garnered much attention within Austin’s local music scene and beyond. The band has also been welcomed to join CMJ in New York in October and has plenty more in store for their audience in the near future. If you’re in Austin tonight be sure to check…
Female Exploration
Based out of New York City, NY, Richard Supriano is an 18 year old graphic designer and artist currently attending Parsons the New School for Design. Supriano uses dots to create female erotic poses from selfies to show that female bodies are simply bodies and don’t always need to be sexualized. Upon first view of Supriano’s art, the viewer can clearly make out a female body, but as the viewer zooms in closer and on each individual piece and specific dot, the art (and body) becomes distorted. Here is a three-piece collection to Supriano’s nine piece series. To view the rest of his collection and artwork you can follow him…
JOHN HURLEY TAKEOVER!
John Hurley is an 18 year old visual artist from Bumfuck, Louisiana with a good eye and big dreams. He has a dry sense of humor and a slick demeanor. He runs a Instagram feed that features his digital art. Currently, he is embarking on an ambitious collaborative art endeavor with friends and strangers from all around the country. Far from conventional and even further from stale, Hurley is most definitely an artist to be familiar with,…
SAILOR POON TAKEOVER!
Austin’s very own Sailor Poon came together just over a year ago and are taking the music scene into their own hands and carving out their very own space. Performing under various stage names like Sally Poon and Suzy Poon, what is immediately apparent is their familial-like connection and their ability to join forces to provide something genre-bending, both in their records and with their live performances. Describing their music as “shitty post sincerity”, you never quite know what to expect from Sailor Poon – from their country song “Ol’ Bessie” to their metal track “Butt Gush”, they’re down to experiment with it all. A little tongue in cheek,…

Kevin Kurecki Takeover!
Based out of Chicago, Illinois, 26 year old artist Kevin Kurecki moved to Austin, TX as a way of escape from the harsh winters as well as a change from his northern environment, and has been loving the city ever since. Focusing primarily on photography and handmade collage art over the last few years has provided Kurecki with a means of expressing himself via a different portal away from this world into his own. His art stemmed initially from writing down all his personal musings, lyrics, art, and sayings in a moleskin notebook, which unfortunately got destroyed along the way during his life travels. Kurecki mentions that his art…

8am with Cary Fagan
It’s 9am New York time when I call Cary Fagan. That’s 8am for him in Houston. 8am. On a Saturday. I guess whoever said success never sleeps was right because he’s ready to talk. I apologize for getting him up so early anyway. His voice is low and easy, like I had called one of my friends the morning after we had gone out, and puts me at ease to ask whatever I want. I want to know about the girls. The majority of Fagan’s work is rooted in the beauty and intricacies of the female body. He photographs models and model friends, only occasionally breaking away to the…
Social Networking: Connection Replaced By Competition
I’ll preface this as I preface most of my “possibly important life lesson” rants with a quick anecdote about one of my relationships. My boyfriend and I had a fight the other day. It wasn’t over anything particularly serious and there was no yelling from either party, however, our little spat left a bad taste in my mouth that I can’t seem to shake. Allow me to rewind a little: the day we fought marked the launch of Instagram’s much-tweeted-about introduction of Instagram Video, or as they really should have called it, Instavid (in case you’ve been living under a rock with no wi-fi, users can now post short video…
Facebook Affection: A Rant
Prepare yourselves, ladies and gentlemen, because I am about to rant your face off. Now, Valentine’s Day was a while ago, and on that fine day, your news feed was probably filled with unusually affectionate things. Of course, that is to be expected. However, then you come across the girl who writes things such as “Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without the best boyfriend in the world,” and “You make my days brighter and my heart feel like a butterfly in metamorphosis…blah blah blah.” You get the picture. Now, these kinds of comments are permissible on Valentine’s Day, but what pisses me off is the kind of…
