An Interview with The Garden
An Interview with The Garden By: Anthony Flores I had a chance to meet with and interview The Garden before one of their shows in Austin on this last tour. Asking them all of the questions Becky and I have wondered was great, especially since they were some of the nicest people I have met. Check out their music via their Bandcamp and follow them on social media to keep up with them for the rest of their tour! Blondi’s Salvation US Tour Documentary
Back on April 28th, Blondi’s Salvation (based in Nantes, France) arrived in Austin, Texas to begin their first US tour with LEVITATION Fest, which earlier that day was sadly canceled. With courage in their hearts and a drive to share music with our country, they pressed on and played many shows around the United States. Accompanied by Axel Vanlerberghe, who documented all of their adventures through photos and video, they captured a very unique glance at the strange American ways of today. Here is a short documentary of the French medieval psychedelic band’s misadventures through the states. Fantastic Fest’s Fashionista: A Journey Through Addiction and Recovery Inside a Woman’s Psyche
When it comes to films about addiction and recovery, there’s a plethora of titles that explore these themes in terms of drug use and sexuality. Director Simon Rumley examines these topics through a different lens that is universal to all of us — at what point do we separate creating our own individual identity using clothing vs. a full blown addiction to the material? Fashionista analyzes the harrowing journey of April (Amanda Fuller) who runs a vintage clothing store with her partner Eric (Ethan Embry). As distrust and infidelity begin to create an undeniable rift in their relationship, April delves further and further into her (literal) mountains of clothes…
Artists On Our Radar: Alayna Kingston
Alayna Kingston is a student & photographer from Austin, TX. Instagram – – – – – – – – – ANON: How would you describe your photography? Alayna: I’ve always considered my pictures candids of people I’ve cared about. It wasn’t really done for anyone else. It was for me by me to remember. Because when I look at the pictures, I forget about if we’re even friends anymore; I’m just happy to know that moment in time existed and I was able to capture that. Alayna: I hope my photography is similar to Stefan Ruiz’s in that it is an active participation and not just a stolen moment. – – – –…
A Daydream From Another Planet: River Jones’ Official Music Video For “Pure”
Collaborative chance encounters are always thriving in the city of Austin, Texas. Back in June, River Jones partnered with local indie pop band Tele Novella for a music video shoot they had scheduled and just so happened to meet Lorelei Linklater, director Richard Linklater’s daughter. Both Jones and Linklater spent the day decked out in blue makeup and alien costumes and the two artists stuck up an undeniable friendship. During a road trip to Dallas singing along to Elliott Smith, the duo decided to collaborate on Jones’ music video for “Pure”, a track he had written days before meeting Lorelei. Within a week the video was recorded and features…
Tele Novella Takeover!
Tele Novella is an inspired macabre-pop band out of Austin, TX. They are dreamy, they are spooky, and they write real fucking songs. While one may detect the influence of the nocturnal jungles of Os Mutantes or the lapelled, knee-socked smarts of Belle and Sebastian, they have cobbled together a special kind of mineral all their own worth making room on the Table of Elements for. Earnest, yet sinister; Vampy, but sentimental. The precise recipe that goes into this concoction cannot be revealed, but it is a delightful snow globe of warm, colorful darkness. In 2014, they won a contest for free recording time at Dub Narcotic Studios in…
Flavorsound Productions Presents Austin’s Class of 2016
Less like the trials and tribulations of surviving high school, Austin’s up and coming bands of 2016 have quickly leaped from freshmen status to celebrating the successes of senior graduation. Austin’s Class of 2016’s compilation features 17 talented acts that have attained the public’s attention and recognition of being musically sound, dedicated to their craft, and gaining quick notoriety within their local music scene. Flavorsound Production’s playlist does nothing short of highlighting a vast sample of music genres to quench everyone’s ears — from Planet Manhood’s fuzzy distorted throwback to 90’s alt-rock, Common Velvet’s sensual electronic melodies, and The Sister Ray’s lo-fi rock ‘n’ roll-meets-pop reminiscent of The Shangri-Las, listeners…
The Bolos: Today San Antonio…Tomorrow The World
Two years ago as Austin’s complacency felt saturated by the overall stagnation of rock n roll, I came across The Bolos. They were young, hungry, and most importantly not just another band jumping shark and attempting to poorly play psyche. From the very beginning they stood out as a band with grit, shaping music out of creativity rather than a need to feel cool, a rare band from San Antonio to not lean on the region as a crutch but instead using it to incubate their noise and presence into something worth more than scene nods and not having to pay the cover whenever hitting up the local spot.…

Review: Levitation Kick-Off Party at Barracuda
Words by: Trish Connelly Photography: Raphael Umscheid ( Instagram ) Emotions were at an all time high this weekend after the cancellation of Levitation Fest in Austin, Texas, with less than 24 hours notice. Was this some kind of cruel joke? Can I get a refund on my round-trip plane tickets from Norway? Despite the chaos that ensued, the majority of the festival-goers made the most of it by attending rescheduled sets at local venues downtown and did their best to nab a couple online tickets to bigger headliner sets while they could. On a high note, the scheduled pre-Levitation shows set to go down on Thursday, April 28th…

When the Beach Boys Say Forever, They Mean FOREVER: Still America’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band 50 Years Later
Words by: Merri Palmer Photographer: Ismael Quintanilla III I thought I knew what rock ‘n’ roll was until I saw The Beach Boys. My generation grew up on Beach Boys’ surf rock, a sound so familiar and quintessential to American life that it may as well have been baseball, or apple pie, or stars and stripes. I have a sharp childhood memory of singing “Barbara Ann” at the top of my lungs in a restaurant bathroom. As those harmonies eked through the raspy speakers and into my soul, I knew this was music. As I grew older, friends got into boy bands and pop, hip-hop and metal. I felt…
Music Video Premiere: River Jones’ “Radio Waves”
Austin, Texas’ very own River Jones has a knack of pleasantly surprising us every now and then with his incredibly unique and personal solo project after periods of pensively working hard at his craft. Contrary to his previous work we’ve featured, Jones’ music video for “Radio Waves” is a more spirited and optimistic track, perfectly suited for imminent spring days. Directed by River Jones and Sarah Mullinnix, “Radio Waves” uses overlapping images and kaleidoscopic color schemes, capturing a dream-like state of dizzying forms and bold lyrics popping in front of your eyes. Jones gravitates towards the past, referring back to prior memories of love and describing the object of…

An Evening with Low at The Parish
Words by: Trish Connelly Photography: Raphael Umscheid Despite my belated discovery of Low’s music, their album Things We Lost in the Fire defined a significant portion of my college years. More often than not I’d put “Sunflower” and “Dinosaur Act” on repeat, the soundtrack to my solitary Sunday nights. This past Tuesday, I found myself front and center for their An Evening With show at The Parish in Austin, Texas. A hush ran through the crowd as soon as they graced the stage, guitarist and vocalist Sparhawk’s voice blending effortlessly and magnificently with drummer Mimi Parker’s falsetto. Throughout the first half of their set the band played audience favorites…
Band Spotlight: Common Velvet
Photo by Candice Quarnstrom In light of the growing trend of psychedelic and electronic music, Austin-based band Common Velvet veers off in their own psych-pop filled path, creating infectious gems complete with silky vocals courtesy of front-woman Lauren Sanders. Sanders wrote and recorded demos before fully forming the band, now consisting of Andrew Orsak on guitar, Dane Edwards on bass, Andrew Alter on drums and Mathew Antony on keys. Their newest track, “It Was Your Idea, Not Mine”, was recorded in Austin, Texas by Allie Lingren and mixed in Fort Worth by Curtis Heath. “It Was Your Idea, Not Mine” is a perfect piece to turn up on your…

Shop Local This Xmas
Not sure what to get for your friends or family for Christmas this year? Sure, there are all sorts of bargains and coupons and nonsense, but this year we think it’s time to start putting our money towards something more deserving, which is why we’re going local this Christmas. Mom and Pop shops are the ones who put in the time and effort, so why not help them out? It is the season of giving or whatever, right? So give back to your local shops and let them know they’ve got your support! Goat Haus Dairy Goat Haus Dairy has been one of my favorite finds here in Texas because…
Shana Falana Takeover!
Spanning across the last twenty years, Shana Falana started in 1995 out of the DIY scene in San Francisco. Eight years later, Falana left California to move to New York to pursue her own music career in the Brooklyn music scene. Upon meeting drummer Mike Amari over their mutual love for Bauhaus, the visionary powerhouse duo set off on tour shortly after. With the release of their 2015 album off Team Love Records, Set Your Lightning Fire Free, Falana ingeniously crafts a record filled with ten uplifting and experimental tracks. As the album title suggests, Falana tears down preconceived notions of any so-called rules while making this album,…
together PANGEA Takeover!
L.A.-based trio together PANGEA are certainly one act that aren’t afraid to experiment; initiating with a strong DIY ethos, the band started writing songs in vocalist and guitarist William Keegan’s bedroom in Santa Clarita, California, while playing countless dynamic house shows. With their critically acclaimed 2014 album Badillac, the band won their fans over effortlessly with bold and capable musical exploration and energy to their sets. The band isn’t afraid to go where no garage-rock band has gone before, this time with a more polished and slick sound on their most recent album, The Phage. With their constant travels and being on the road for so long, Keegan describes…
Harmony In Hell: A Halloween-Themed Album
Photo by Rambo Claire Morales and Daniel Markham (Austin, TX) have teamed up to write a Halloween-themed album for the month of October. While initially concocting a song about a serial killer, the duo was inspired to write more dark and ominous tracks and the project spiraled off from there with ten songs and combined illustrations created in a span of a few weeks. The album was fueled by candy, coffee, long walks and secret rituals that will continue to remain secret. Morales and Markham hope to instill feelings of unease and jitters with their spook-filled melodies within you this Halloween season. Harmony in Hell by Daniel Markham…
Raw Paw Takeover!
Based in Austin, Texas, Raw Paw is a community involved in all things digital and analog, and are dedicated to supporting to and publishing next-level art to a wide audience. Raw Paw began in 2010 as a medley of house shows, poetry potlucks, and acquiring new talent in Austin’s local community. They have since grown from a DIY zine into a quality print and music record label and have hosted a wide range of festivals (most recently Ditch the Fest during both ACL weekends), book readings, collaborated with Rough House Anthology and have gained even more notoriety being the proud owners of two billboards in the city. …
UTOPiAfest Review
Photographer: Alexandra Galewsky Writer: Amy Bauerschlag The tallest man in the crowd stands in front of me (because of course, my luck), with his arms sprawled out, his index and middle fingers of both hands forming peace signs, in what I can only interpret is his way of saying, “Hell yeah!” to Of Montreal who are performing in front of him. These peace signs envelop the feeling this whole fest gave me: a feeling of love and admiration for the bands and the 1,000 acres of the Four Sisters’ Ranch that carried the UTOPiAfest-goers this past Labor Day weekend. It might be my 24 years…
Three Bones Takeover!
Based out of Austin, TX, Three Bones can best be described as having “the principal of swampy grit and phenomenal songwriting, Victoria [de Benedicty]’s voice will make you strong, it will heal your wounds. The immeasurable feel of this group will have you kneeling at their church of soul.” A Finalist Winner of The John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2015, Three Bones has garnered much attention within Austin’s local music scene and beyond. The band has also been welcomed to join CMJ in New York in October and has plenty more in store for their audience in the near future. If you’re in Austin tonight be sure to check…
Safety In Numbers: A Collaborative Art Benefit Show
Photo collage by Kevin Kurecki Jessica Nixon’s collaborative community art event, Safety in Numbers, featuring a wide range of visual art, music, performance art and film, will take place this Friday at The Monstrosity in Austin, TX. The intention behind the show is to bring a community together to experience a night of culture in hopes of raising money for SafePlace, a local non-profit organization that seeks to end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention and social change. Organizer and curator Nixon has put together community art events in the past, including Pythagoras Discovering the Musical Intervals at Pump Project back in 2012. After graduating from…
The Marfa Diary: A Guide
When you mention to people that you’re going to Marfa, the usual response is “What the hell is that?” Marfa, Texas: Home to roughly 1,000 interesting and quirky people, and an 8.5 hour drive from my house. This tiny town located just outside of Big Bend in the western wing of Texas is relatively small, but home to a wide variety of surprisingly neat and artistic attractions. It might also be one of my favorite places in the world, as of this past weekend. Now, I wasn’t totally clueless when offered the chance to take a trip out to Marfa, but I certainly had no idea what to expect other…
Ears and Soul in the Clouds: A Shoegaze Night with Sixteen Deluxe, Casual Strangers, and Ringo Deathstarr
Set in the heart of Austin’s Red River music culture district, Empire Control Room boasts an enormous space with visuals spanning and surrounding a 180 degree scene inside their venue. No place could be more fitting than to host a bill comprised of this city’s very own psychedelic and shoegaze acts Casual Strangers, Sixteen Deluxe and Ringo Deathstarr. Casual Strangers are something of an enigma – continually toying with music genres of varying nature, one never knows quite what to expect from this experimental tour de force. Rather than scripting out the precise why’s and how’s, the band lets loose their creative energy to present a raw and…
SAILOR POON TAKEOVER!
Austin’s very own Sailor Poon came together just over a year ago and are taking the music scene into their own hands and carving out their very own space. Performing under various stage names like Sally Poon and Suzy Poon, what is immediately apparent is their familial-like connection and their ability to join forces to provide something genre-bending, both in their records and with their live performances. Describing their music as “shitty post sincerity”, you never quite know what to expect from Sailor Poon – from their country song “Ol’ Bessie” to their metal track “Butt Gush”, they’re down to experiment with it all. A little tongue in cheek,…

Photographer: Kaelin Wideman Kaelin Wideman has a BA in photography from the Art Institute of Austin Texas. Her work centers on stills, mainly using organic and vintage items. I don’t always know how that story might look to others I just know it has a story to tell.”
Kevin Kurecki Takeover!
Based out of Chicago, Illinois, 26 year old artist Kevin Kurecki moved to Austin, TX as a way of escape from the harsh winters as well as a change from his northern environment, and has been loving the city ever since. Focusing primarily on photography and handmade collage art over the last few years has provided Kurecki with a means of expressing himself via a different portal away from this world into his own. His art stemmed initially from writing down all his personal musings, lyrics, art, and sayings in a moleskin notebook, which unfortunately got destroyed along the way during his life travels. Kurecki mentions that his art…

Unbound in the Middle: An Interview with Alta Violet’s River Jones
River Jones’ released his self-titled EP for his highly anticipated new indie-rock project, Alta Violet, in late March of this year. Reminiscent of Elliott Smith and The Beatles, Jones’ style is immaculate and well crafted, seeing as he has already carved out a name for himself in the bustling Austin music scene. Always having been a prolific writer since his adolescent years, Jones’ states that “if I stopped writing yesterday, I would never need to write a new song again and I would have a careers worth of catalog songs”. Not only does Jones sing and play the drums, bass, guitars and keys on his album, he also recorded…
Greenbeard Takeover!
Described as “desert rock from the sun stricken soil of Austin, TX”, Greenbeard bring out the heavy rock ‘n’ roll grooves with a psychedelic twist. Chance Parker, Marc Maddox, Buddy Hachar and Ethan Thayer have seen an incredible amount of achievement since the formation of their band Greenbeard, and rightly so. With their success of their self-titled album last November, their current eight date tour from Texas to the Pacific Northwest, and with Denver’s The Underground Music Showcase in store for them on July 25th, you’ll surely be hearing more from Greenbeard in the near future, if you haven’t already. Make sure to catch them live on June 5th…

Foxhunt’s Strange Creatures Album Review
Originating in Austin, Texas, Foxhunt emerges onto the music scene with a mixture of modern folk, dreamy electronics and teeming tones of alternative rock. Beginning their career as a group, Joseph Kosier, Stephen Marshall, Nadyia Marshall and Wesley Goins have yet to release their studio album, Strange Creatures, and is met with as much anticipation as excitement to preview the beginning to a long road of success embedded in their path. Unlike many other bands mixing genres together to discover a profound fuse of something unknown to music lovers abroad, Foxhunt centers around “love, alienation and the price of both.” When circulating the depths of music, Foxhunt uses the…

We interviewed Sean about his art and what you can expect from his show and book release this Friday evening. What has been your background with art? What mediums do you work with? $3 Shows Fundraiser for Lobo Sucio Creative
Lauren Bruno, founder of $3 Shows, has worked with large non-profits for several years. After a while, she turned her sights on smaller, locally-based groups. When she saw that local non-profit groups didn’t have a budget for events or promotion, due to all of their money going toward their missions, she told us, “I saw a need to really help these organizations… put together a worthy event to showcase what they’re doing.” During our phone interview, she stressed Community, Collaboration, and Cross Promotion, or what she called the Three C’s. These 3 C’s are what she strives to accomplish with $3 Shows. “I want people… to walk away with a…
Women On Our Radar: Natalie Ribbons and Lauren Bruno
Natalie Ribbons // Tele Novella It’s impossible to miss Natalie Ribbons with her unique sense of vintage fashion and swirling vocals brought forth onstage with her band, Tele Novella. With a track on the Wes Anderson tribute album, I Saved Latin!, covering The Velvet Underground’s “Stephanie Says” and a tour in the works, this is certainly one Austin-based act that is a must-see. What initially inspired you to start playing music? How did Tele Novella come together? I started playing music at a pretty young age and took piano lessons from age 5-16. I was never a very stellar piano player, though. It wasn’t until I started going…
