Despite what images the band’s name may conjure, Pity Sex stray away from regrets with their increasingly experimental and innovative nature, starting with their first EP for Dark World and continuing throughout their musical career to their most recent album, White Hot Moon. The band formed in 2011 in the college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan, while meeting guitarist/vocalist Britty Drake who was booking shows in her basement. The band moved in together and has since ventured to tour across the world, including Europe and Australia, with the hopes to branch out and play shows in non-English speaking countries in the near future.
Juxtaposing the ideas of nature vs artificiality in many of their song’s lyrics, Pity Sex unravels our universal experiences when it comes to love and relationships barrelled together with modern technology’s increasingly cold and distant barriers (“Saw you dancing on TV/Lick the glass”). The band further combines unlikely devices by cleverly intertwining Drake’s airy and ethereal vocals with guitarist/vocalist’s Brennan Greaves’ heavier and smoky tone. The dynamic contrast of their vocals alternate between both lovers telling their side of the story rather than the common thread of failed love from the rejected’s point of view. Drawing comparisons from alt-rockers’ Dinosaur Jr. to more current shoegaze acts, Pity Sex cites Yo La Tengo as one of their strongest influences, admiring the band’s ability to strive for something new and refreshing with each album’s undertaking.
Pity Sex is currently on tour until mid-July with PWR BTTM and Petal in North America, and then headed for a short run of dates in Australia and the UK in September and October. Trish Connelly is the Austin-based guru who does booking and promoting at Cheer Up Charlies under The Nothing Song. She’s always down to collaborate and plan a show or event in town. She’s an expert with mixtapes (for all musicians out there you’ll want to send her your stuff!), and making connections with the cool kids. She may have a tad obsession with comics and Corgies, but she keeps it under control. You can follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
