Ashley Armitage is a 21-year-old photographer from Seattle currently majoring in photography at UW.
Her work is an exploration of what it means to represent femininity through a woman’s viewpoint and not through a man’s fantasy. Over the last few months, she has focused on highlighting the private lives and routines of girlhood. Applying makeup, getting dressed, hanging out in bedrooms, gossiping in bathrooms. These are all things that constitute girlhood and womanhood and are often ridiculed as superficial, vain, petty, and catty. Her work is an attempt to reclaim these activities in a positive light and to show teenage girls are well-rounded people, not as flat stereotypes.
