Living Local: Bryan/College Station Edition

This is for all y’all Bryan-College Station locals out there who have asked the question, what am I doing in a place like this? Admit it, you’ve thought it at one point or another. And though it may seem that you live in a far away land, devoid of art, culture, local flare, and all things interesting, this is not the case. Get ready, because I’m about to give you an inside scoop into the best of Bryan-College Station. After reading this, you’ll be well versed on all the local hot spots and events. The best part? You’ll be supporting your local community at the same time as enjoying all the local community of BCS has to offer! And, let’s be honest, we could all do a little more in the way of supporting our communities.

First, and most importantly, let’s start with the food.

Best eateries:

The Village Downtown: This local hideaway has everything your little heart could desire. Besides being a fantastic restaurant, it is also a coffee house, art gallery (featuring local artists), and live music and event venue. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, they have live music, as well as during lunch on the weekends. And, if that isn’t enough, they endorse local farms and serve locally roasted coffee beans.

Fuego Tortilla Grill: Marinated meats, handmade tortillas, and it’s open 24 hours a day. How could you say no to that? And, although they do have quite scrumptious tacos, if you are a queso lover like myself, prepare to be astounded. Their roasted poblano queso is to die for. I seriously could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day for the rest of my life. Yes, it’s that good. So, if you’re feeling Mexican food at 2am (or any time for that matter), be sure to check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Grub Burger Bar: With freshly baked buns and a proprietary blend of beef, both made daily, who wouldn’t love this place? And what’s a burger without fries? And theirs are pretty darn good. Get some sweet potato fries, if you’re into that kind of thing, or just plain old French fries. Either way, you’re going to love them. And don’t even get me started on their milkshakes – so delicious. If you’re not already rearing to go grab a seat at Grub Burger Bar, they also pledge to source local whenever they can.

Mr. G’s Pizzeria: For all you pizza lovers out there, Mr. G’s Pizzeria is the place to go. Pick which way you like your pizza: white, whole wheat crust, or even gluten free.  And, if you’re really hungry, try their calzones. They’re huge – one could seriously feed an army. Or, maybe just you and your significant other, depending on how hungry you two are.

Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill: Devoted to serving their local community, Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill is found nowhere other than College Station, Texas. See either of their two locations nearby for awesome burgers, fries, bbq sandwiches, and much, much more. Grab a beer, glass of wine, or margarita to compliment your food. With so many options, you can’t go wrong!

Things to see, places to go:

First Fridays: My absolute, favorite event in the B/CS area, downtown Bryan holds First Fridays (bet you can’t guess when) every first Friday of the month. Shops open their doors to the public later than usual, free concerts happen, you’ll fall back in love with your community. Sometimes, free movies on the grass even happen. Just check ahead of time to make sure one is scheduled to show. So, make sure to make room in your schedule for the first Friday of every month!

Salsa Wednesdays and Saturdays: The Village Downtown holds salsa dancing and lessons every Wednesday and Saturday night. So, head to downtown Bryan on Wednesdays, from 8pm-12am and Saturdays from 10pm-2am. Prices range from $5-$8 on Wednesday nights (depending on whether or not you want a lesson) and $5 general admission (including lesson) on Saturday nights. See their website for more details. Added bonus: on both of these nights they have free parking and drink specials with ID if 21 or older.

Revolution Café and Bar: This place has an awesome atmosphere and great patio seating. Every Sunday night at 8:30pm they have Mic Check Poetry, which I highly recommend attending. Feel free to bring your own poetry to read, if you’re brave enough! And if you’re hungry, they’re now serving Mr. G’s pizza by the slice. Also, be sure to support the bar and grab a drink or two!

Grand Stafford Theater: A great venue to catch live music almost weekly. Home to some great concerts, from award winners to regional favorites, they have it all. See their calendar of events for upcoming shows and get ready to mark your calendar!

Brazos Valley Farmers Market: Currently, the Brazos Valley Farmers Market holds two weekly markets. Support local food producers and get something fresh for a change! You won’t regret it! Be sure to check the website for times and locations, depending on the season, before you go!

It is vital that we support our local economy and community. So, if you haven’t already, be sure to check out these eateries and attend these events as soon as you can! So, what are you waiting for? Go enjoy your local community!
