Jon Benjamin: Jazz Daredevil

Comedian and actor Jon Benjamin, notably known for his voice as Bob in Bob’s Burgers and Archer from Archer, spent three hours in the studio to record a jazz album, Well, I Should Have…. Best part?  He has no idea how to play the piano. “I’m not a huge fan of jazz—never was,” Benjamin states about his new record. “And that’s why I thought it would be funny to make a jazz album.”

Jon Benjamin – Well, I Should Have…

Some may love Benjamin’s bold undertaking at making a record with a genre he’s unfamiliar with, others may loathe the fact. “Most would call this reckless. I call it jazz. What you are about to experience is an aural auto da fe. I am the jazz daredevil”, asserts Benjamin. Well, I Should Have… also features guest appearances by friends Aziz Ansari and Kristen Schaal, and was recorded and mixed by Mark Desimone, except for “Amy’s Song (The Bum Steer)” which was mixed by Loren Bouchard of Bob’s Burgers and Home Movies. You can purchase the album off Sub Pop’s website today.

As a non jazz enthusiast myself, it’s hilarious that I’m listening to him play and thinking that he’s doing great. I guess Ben and I have the same perception of the genre as far as rhythm and sound. To me jazz sounds like an artists immediate form of expression, as an unpredictable and non calculated choice of sounds. Very funny to watch “professionals” collaborate with Ben and his whimsical form.
