Controlling the Common Cold by Melissa Hall ( Instagram / Twitter )   Melissa Hall received her MFA in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She currently lives in Austin, Texas where she tutors English and writing to students with learning disabilities. In her spare time, Melissa volunteers as a grant writer for a local nonprofit (Kids In A New Groove), and attends as many concerts as her budget allows.   For the past day and a half, I’ve had a Charley-horse in my right leg. The cramp is so bad that straightening it completely leads to falling awkwardly to the floor. At work, I hobble around, grimacing from…

  • Dear Thrive: My Creativity Has Dried Up

    August 28, 2017 /

Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. Dear Thrive, I haven’t created anything in a month. Have I dried up? Is this it? Do I give up now? -Beyond Saving — Dear Beyond, I want to be as sensitive to your plight as I can be, because while we have all been there at one time or another, when you’re in the thick of it you can’t see any way out. There’s zero hope. And trying to find camaraderie in it is painful. It tires me out when I’m in a rough patch and someone reminds me that “It always passes.” How do they know this…

    August 21, 2017 /

Welcome to Thrive! A weekly advice column for creatives and the generally confused. Dear Thrive, How do I transition from a normal job to pursuing my dream job as an artist/creative? -Lost in Corp-landia — Dear Corp-landia, Sadly for us artists, there is no obvious ladder to climb when it comes to creative work. Folks in other careers have the luxury of clear and direct paths to the top. Companies give them mentors and reviews and steps to succeed. If you work hard, you’re often rewarded with a promotion, a way to reach the next rung on the ladder. Creative work isn’t so direct and while that’s what we love…

In nine hours, we’ll be waiting for it, the travelers of this age, running in circles, awaiting escape. (Full moons are much more powerful than I’ve ever noticed). In…

Dear Thrive, What is it that makes some of us ready to pounce, ready to make the necessary change, while others flounder, become apathetic, or dig their feet into the ground even more? August 11, 2017 /

Photo Credit: Steve Gullick   Despite channeling his idea during a crisp Halloween night in Los Angeles, Marlon Williams‘ latest music video for “Vampire Again” feels entirely welcome at any time of the year.  Having released his debut record off Dead Oceans in early 2016, New Zealand’s singer/songwriter Williams paints an aurally infectious and humorous portrait for the comfortably alone. Restless in his attempts to write a new song, Williams decided to venture solo to the LA Opera’s performance of a new score to Nosferatu while decked out in extravagant costume (and simultaneously stoned) on October 31st. Says Williams’ of his experience that night, “when I finally enter[ed] the theatre…

I highly regard the idea of contradictions and takes pleasure in realizing the complexity of things. Nothing is simple and no borders are conspicuous. I enjoy immersing myself in the world of blurred barriers between ascetics and hedonism, austerity and lustre, minimalism and abundance. In my work I aim to explore unnoticed oppositions underpinning various phenomena. My work is strongly rooted in the colourful realm of the 2000’s. I grew…

Photography: Mike Manewitz ( Instagram ) Words: Trish Connelly ( Instagram )   Spanning a two decade plus music career, Athens’ Elf Power has continued to bubble along the indie-rock surface and have since carved out their own niche. A significant player in Elephant 6 Collective (which includes the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal) the band’s initial lo-fi quality gained them notoriety while their more recent albums have explored a broader musical map of genres and melodic standouts. Elf Power took the stage last Friday night at Austin’s downtown music venue Barracuda for the latter part of their U.S. tour to a gradually bustling crowd. Playing…

I started to shoot this set by following my instincts: my model Chiara was with me in a gorgeous lagoon in Fuerteventura and the colors were magnificent. I took the red dress from so many others I had in my backpack, turned on portable speakers, and we were isolated from the entire universe. I thought of the song “Desert Rose” by Sting, its oriental sound so close to my Sicilian background. I thought about its words,  “… the desire that borns from love …” Disiu            …
