  • Music Video Premiere: Zachman’s “Your World Cuts Into Mine”

    November 30, 2016 /

Photo by Roger Ho   With a meticulous eye for creativity, Austin’s psychedelic/rock band Zachman has forged a musical project both personal and accessible. Already garnering attention from the likes of BrooklynVegan, Ovrld and Do512, Zachman is composed of a written and aural storyline by Johnny Zachman entitled I Was Getting On a Plane. With a multitude of chapters and a plethora of songs underway, each piece remains a distinct vignette. Zachman’s new music were recorded directly to tape at The Bell Tree Studio with Gary Calhoun James (Box of Baby Birds, Rain Collectors) — and the band has celebrated their releases at renowned venues in Austin such as The…

  • Artists On Our Radar: Rebecca Chitticks

    November 29, 2016 /

Artist: Rebecca Chitticks ( Instagram )   I’m a contemporary figurative artist working in oil on canvas. I find my work to be informed by the creeping influence of the digital realm. This sphere that we participate in casually within our day to day life seeps into our unconscious and I feel this influences my artistic practise. Whilst browsing through feeds and skimming streams of data I am constantly soaking up ideas and finding relationships, imagined narratives between disparate threads of information, fragments of pictures, colours and these are used as my references. Oil paint acts as a conduit through which I am able to convey the fleetingness and allure of beauty. I hope to incite emotion through my choice of imagery…

    November 28, 2016 /

Schwein! Interview and “Cindy Make Him” Single Release Interview by Jay Armstrong Photographs by Isaiah Mancha   More often than not the people you encounter with music have an ego overshadowing their skill, the art taking a backseat to the caricature they align their lives to portray. Then there is the anomaly that is Matt Schwein—all substance, no ego, a dedication to his craft unparalleled, all with a positive heart of gold and an always friendly disposition. Both of us arriving in Austin within months of each other and having taken notice early on how both our paths crossed and mirrored the other rather similarly with our assimilation and ever…

  • Seed In My Ear: Holy Wave Tour Documentary from Backdive

    November 25, 2016 /

Combining their love of music and film, Rachel Kichler and Willi Patton created Backdive as a platform to showcase their collaborative documentary work. Inspired by Fugazi’s film The Instrument, Kichler and Patton wanted to encompass ATX-based band Holy Wave’s spirit for living in the moment rather than a perspective of the past. Initially the duo anticipated the band to take the footage for their short documentary, Seed In My Ear, while on the road and later Kichler and Patton would work on editing the film, but instead Backdive decided to embark on tour to Europe and eventually the west coast with the band. What became a last minute road…

  • Jazz in the Spotlight with Brooklyn’s A Tree Grows

    November 22, 2016 /

Photo by Amber Gress   One of the most fascinating things about music as an artform is its ability to touch and inspire the soul of so many that it can unite a community around it. It is the hearth of a community, so to speak, giving hope and reflection in a society cluttered with noise and information overload. Just like the Brooklyn rock explosion that occurred several years ago, jazz in this legendary corner of NYC has been undergoing a renaissance. With Manhattan being overly expensive these days and artists finding it harder to find gigs there, Brooklyn has come to play a vital role in the city’s larger…

Suddenly I was in my 30’s, and I hadn’t done ‘Cop Out,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, this is awesome.’ And then another 10 years dropped off, and I was in my 20’s making all those movies people like, referencing ‘Star Wars’ like crazy and stuff. • Where Are Your Friends: BUHU’s “Youth Is Breaking” Music Video

    November 15, 2016 /

Bandcamp || Facebook || Instagram || Twitter   Growing up and merging into adulthood can take on a vast array of forms, which tends to reach a breaking point when we cling onto the last fraying threads of excess and self-indulgence for as long as we can rather than maturing and taking responsibility for our actions and their consequences. Austin, Texas’ art-rock band Buhu sifts through the haze and the bullshit with their new music video for “Youth is Breaking” off their 2016 album, Relationshapes. Their latest single poses complexities to each individual depicted in the video, not content with displaying to their audience a simple black and white presentation,…

    November 11, 2016 /

Photo by Scott Troya While many of us may never be able to quite articulate the vast nature and force of relationships, Philadelphia based punk band Mannequin Pussy succeed in encompassing the full spectrum of emotions that human connections draw forth within us in their fittingly-titled album, Romantic. With each song ringing in at under three minutes, Romantic is simultaneously jarring, introspective, and playful. Growing from a two-piece to a quartet, the band broaches perspectives in their songs that aren’t simply summed up in a black and white manner; with title tracks like “Everything” and “Anything” Mannequin Pussy aims to explore the ambiguous and intangible without being tightly constrained in…

Founded by Nate Krenkel and Conor Oberst in 2003, Team Love Records has since expanded into a tightly knit crew including staff members Rebecca, Matt and Autumn. The record label’s formation was ignited by Oberst’s frustrations at not being able to spotlight upcoming talent quickly enough on Saddle Creek Records, where his own Bright Eyes’ albums were released. Team Love’s first release was on June 22nd, 2004 with Tilly and the Wall’s album, Wild Like Children, followed by…

Baby Bangs: Owning Our Baby Hearts By Jay Armstrong   A few months back I was in the early stages of piecing together a house show when I received a text from Bryan Roberts (The Dizzease /Booher ) saying there was a newer band out of San Antonio, Baby Bangs, who I should hit up about getting them on the lineup. This is the same guy who turned me on to Junkie and Daikaiju, has a history of playing only in perfect bands, and once spent thirty minutes casually entertaining me with an annotated history of Matthew Melton which forever strengthened an already solid respect I had for Melton—a guy…

One of our early ideas was to cut up a hot dog with a saw and create a GIF out of it and from there the concept developed. We wanted the ideas behind each of the murder scenes to be really dark and decided on a gun crime in a back alley, a cremation, a drowning, a car crash, and a taco getting cut into pieces with a…
