Persistence Pays: The Rich Hands
Finally moving out of the shadows of Black Lips and The Bad Lovers, stepping off in their own definitive direction, The Rich Hands are all grown up and killin’ it better than ever. There is always a timidness when you play something from a band you have been geeking over for so long and immediately notice a change, especially as drastically different from what we have come to love and expect from these dudes, but when it is as solid and spot on as this first batch of songs what else can we do but appreciate what they gave us before and revel in the damn fine ride…
Free Free Dom Dom’s “FFDD”
Based in Berlin, Germany, Free Free Dom Dom is a duo project that emerged in October 2015 under the monikers of Little Voice (vocals/composition) and Philippe Duval (vocals/production). With their unique band name stemming from Japanese inflections, Free Free Dom Dom strive to follow their own musical path and radiate an open-minded attitude. While filming their first music video for “FFDD”, they worked with London-based director and photographer Ophelie Rondeau, embracing a rock ‘n’ roll spirit to their shoot. Using a Super 8mm camera and with only three 8mm rolls at their disposal for a total of nine minutes of film, each moment was critical. Rondeau encouraged them to…

The Besnard Lakes Are A Mystical World of Their Own: An Interview with Olga Goreas
What began as the band’s namesake and getaway for inspiration, The Besnard Lakes’ yearly retreat to their cabin at Besnard Lake in rural Saskatchewan was nearly compromised after a ring of fire surrounded it for several days last year. Perhaps the realization of the ephemerality of things near and dear to the band helped to further enhance their expanded soundscapes and soaring psychedelia in their fifth album, A Coliseum Complex Museum, to be released tomorrow on JagJaguwar. I was more than happy to have the opportunity to interview bassist and vocalist Olga Goreas about the band’s upcoming album, the supernatural influences surrounding their music and visuals, and where the…

8 Bands to Restore Your Faith in Humanity in 2016
Last year receded its long drawn out pandiculation, the lifting fog, a settling realization, clear and sharp, the fire has been rebuilding, it remains wildly alive. Most of the world looks for giants, only wanting to see the shape of a band once the collective whole has deemed it fitting for acceptance. The days of giants are over, never in a world with so much information to pick any spirit, specter, mythos to pieces will we ever see another Stones or Queen. Everything must fit neatly to one side or the other of whatever mercurial line we carve in the sand between the inherently evil “them” and the cynically subjugated…

The Add-Me on Facebook Cop-Out
The “Add Me on Facebook” cop-out is the great escape maneuver of our time; the politest “I’m not particularly interested but don’t want to be a dick”, or “not right now but maybe in a couple of weeks” response in existence. Is it lazy? Sure. Does it keep potentially very nice people at arm’s length? Absolutely. But when you’re single and looking (and occasionally doing more than just looking), you can’t just hand your phone number out like it’s a Domino’s coupon. The “Add Me on Facebook” cop-out is a carefully formulated form of discretion for the modern single woman. I guarantee that if Sex and the City were…
