Lazy Legs – “Ghost”   Based out of Chicago, Lazy Legs lo-fi reverb-filled noise brings their listener back to the early days of My Bloody Valentine and early 90’s shoegaze. Included on their upcoming self-titled EP off cassette tape label and blog Wild Patterns, the band’s single for “Ghost” haunts you with barely-there instrumentals and just as soon kicks off with Michael Tenzer’s crunchy guitar riffs and Laura Wagner’s hazy ethereal vocals, blending flawlessly back and forth in the background and to the forefront. Wagner’s enigmatic lyrics make “Ghost” that of a romantic and dreamy tune, an introspective track perfectly paired for its winter release in January. True to its…

    December 17, 2015 /

Holy Wave: The Evil Has Landed Part 2 In a world of faux social connection bands rise out of hype to show no substance once fully in the light. In this moment of no tolerance for giants, where longevity and ego are despicable to nearly all, bands get discarded before coming close to catching stride as soon as the crowd stops looking like a carbon-copy collective of friends. No one has the time to argue the merits of our broken system, we walk this path acutely aware of the double-standards we rally behind; yes we agree that nearly everything we have loved has eventually let us down; we agree that…

    December 15, 2015 /

Beginning with Kant two hundred years ago and his belief “every event has a cause,” arguing around the framework of experience being supplied not from outside, from the external world itself, but by us, saying the presuppositions of morality are that those who obey the moral law should be rewarded, that the world by default is and continues to become a just place. Shortly thereafter came Hegel and his collective belief, “the learner always begins by finding fault, but the philosopher sees the positive merit in everything,” expounding to say “genuine tragedies in the world are not conflicts between right and wrong. They are conflicts between two rights.” Hegel…

  • Shop Local This Xmas

    December 11, 2015 /

Not sure what to get for your friends or family for Christmas this year? Sure, there are all sorts of bargains and coupons and nonsense, but this year we think it’s time to start putting our money towards something more deserving, which is why we’re going local this Christmas. Mom and Pop shops are the ones who put in the time and effort, so why not help them out? It is the season of giving or whatever, right? So give back to your local shops and let them know they’ve got your support!   Goat Haus Dairy     Goat Haus Dairy has been one of my favorite finds here in Texas because…

    December 9, 2015 /

Pictured: Justin Jacobs as Rob   Ünderworld, a psychedelic slacker comedy, is director Vanessa Pla’s independent birth child starting actors and actresses from across the spectrum. Filmed in San Marcos, Texas, and citing influences like Dazed & Confused and Empire Records,  the film is what happens with a band of slacker youths take over a theme park and save it from subsequent doom. Mike, our protagonist, is not what you’d call a responsible character — a post-college graduate known to sleep in past noon, he is forced to take over the park after his father dies in a tragic accident. With a troop of like-minded friends, including roles from Lorelei…

    December 4, 2015 /

Be it from age or simple cosmic awareness, somewhere along the path we become less a reflection of the external, our own tiny voices finding strength in some collective subconscious of US, we close our eyes in true Jordan Catalano fashion to open them with a rift unfathomable between what we have become and the slate grey existence we have given every last ounce of energy not to digress into.   I’m not an idealist, I’m certainly not delusional, there is nothing “original” to our place in this time; not you, not me, and certainly not US. Socrates took that first sip of hemlock as Kerouac railed on about…

    December 1, 2015 /

Harnessing the surrealism of David Lynch and the soprano of Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser, Pale Dīan certainly evokes a transcendental experience when it comes to their aesthetic and live performance. Initially forming in Dallas, Texas, guitarist Derek Kutzer and vocalist Ruth Smith established new ground in Austin this past summer, as well as a new bassist, Nicolas Volpe. The band also changed their name from Blackstone Rangers to Pale Dīan (‘pale moon’), eliciting dream-like qualities which further helped to solidify their image and sound. Pale Dīan’s textured guitar, lush vocals, and ethereal deliverance have earned them joint touring bills with the likes of Tender Age, Drab Majesty, Them Are…
