These Days I Feel Like a Snail Without a Shell
Paolo Morales‘ documentary-style photography ventures into the ambiguity of his subjects’ preoccupation with their simultaneous need for affection and intimacy, yet maintain emotional distance in urban and domestic settings. Rather than focusing on static subjects, Morales’ fascination with photographing human individuals makes for constant variable interactions, thereby leading to a more authentic and shifting picture. His intent isn’t to craft a perfectly staged outcome, but rather let it develop organically and let the viewer interpret what the subjects may be feeling or thinking. Morales’ title for his collection, “These Days I Feel Like a Snail Without a Shell”, is based on a Haruki Murakami’s novel entitled South of the Border,…

Intimacy and Distance: Photography by Ophelie Rondeau
Ophelie Rondeau is a French self-taught film photographer from Paris, currently living and working in London. Six months ago she started shooting girls on film as a way to capture her perception of friendship, love, and natural beauty in girls she meets, based on the concept of repetition. She finds beauty in every individual and succeeds in capturing girls of different colors, shapes, and origins in her photography. Her focus on relationships and friendships originates from how the internet has affected human contact, depicting human connections as either present or absent. Her inspiration comes primarily from her own life and memories, and by the every day things she sees, hears,…

Cautiontape Takeover!
Austin, Texas’ Cautiontape is comprised of vocalist and songwriter Britani Woods (previously of Petals), Jason Garcia on keyboards and vocals (Household Names), drummer Asher Alexander and bassist Matt Bell-Roberts. Their sound can best be described as upbeat pop licks and danceable electronica to make for one bright and vivacious band. Reminiscent of musical acts like Metric and a throwback to bands such as The Cardigans and The Cars, Cautiontape boasts an infectious sound with ultra striking pop melodies. When it comes to making decisions on the direction of their music, Brit says, “[w]e always know when we’ve done a good take of something because Asher yells “YEAH!!!!” from the…
The Morning After: Claire Morales and Dalton Kane Cover “Summer Wine”
Originally made popular in 1967 by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, “Summer Wine” tells the tale of a woman who invites a man over for wine after noticing his silver spurs. The next morning after a night of heavy drinking, the man notices the mysterious woman has left with his possessions, including his “silver spurs, a dollar and a dime“. Claire Morales and Dalton Kane (Chinaski, the Fury) pair together flawlessly, bringing back the mood and nostalgia of the 60’s time period with an ease of contemporary flair. Morales’ vocals are mysterious and enticing, an impeccable balance with Kane’s brooding and baritone voice. The duo also produced a fitting…
Review: Sidewave’s Glass Giant Is a Welcoming Homage to 90’s Space-Rock
Just when you think 90’s bands like Hum and Stone Temple Pilots have lost their stronghold in this day and age, think again. Sidewave, stemming from high-school friendships and stumbled across Craigslist ads, blends experimental textures, heavy percussion with melodic guitar, and the result is a phenomenal throwback to 90’s space-rock while still maintaining a fresh perspective and sound. With all four band members currently residing in California, Sidewave is gearing up for their first U.S. tour after the release of their upcoming album, Glass Giant, due out on October 5th. Already having opened for renowned acts from The Life and Times and ÆGES, Sidewave has emerged as a…

UTOPiAfest Review
Photographer: Alexandra Galewsky Writer: Amy Bauerschlag The tallest man in the crowd stands in front of me (because of course, my luck), with his arms sprawled out, his index and middle fingers of both hands forming peace signs, in what I can only interpret is his way of saying, “Hell yeah!” to Of Montreal who are performing in front of him. These peace signs envelop the feeling this whole fest gave me: a feeling of love and admiration for the bands and the 1,000 acres of the Four Sisters’ Ranch that carried the UTOPiAfest-goers this past Labor Day weekend. It might be my 24 years…

Handmade and Manmade
Minimal, to the point, and with a twist; exactly how I would describe Ben Medansky Ceramics. Sculptor Medansky started his company in a small Los Angeles studio at just 24 years old. Since then, Medansky has moved studios where all of the work is now designed, crafted by hand, and shipped to other locations. Ben Medansky is not afraid to break the rules. If he has an idea, he will go ahead and make it out of clay, even if it is not the norm. Ben Medansky Ceramics includes the basics with mugs and bowls. And then the not so basics, like pipes. Medansky’s work is collected throughout the…
