Review: Ryley Walker’s “Sweet Satisfaction”
When I typed Ryley Walker’s name into Google for a little context before writing this review, the first thing that came up was an NPR Music writeup about Walker’s latest album, Primrose Green. Its author praises Walker’s use of acoustic-electric guitar riffs to create an unplugged sound that’s more punk rock than coffee shop. He undoubtedly likes Walker’s sound. As a public radio fangirl, I am generally inclined to agree with NPR. As a human being with functioning ears, I am most definitely inclined to really like this song. There are thousands of talented, acoustic guitar-toting singer-songwriters out there, but to be perfectly frank, a great many of them…
Iron and Wine: A Glimpse into the Past and the Future
It’s a refreshing insight into a musician’s growth as an artist and human being when you go back and listen to some of their first recordings. We’re blessed to experience Samuel Beam’s, aka Iron and Wine’s, first musings of what was to become a long and fruitful music career with the release of the Iron and Wine Archives Series Volume No. 1; a collection of songs recorded roughly around the same time as his first album The Creek Drank the Cradle, released in 2002. There is a hum of static that flickers quietly in the corners of the four track cassette recordings like a candle in a cabin at…

No You Can’t Have This Track: Grimes – REALiTi
In case you haven’t heard yet, Grimes’ most recent album was scrapped. Yes, the one with ‘Go’ on it. When asked why, Grimes told that the album just felt “depressing”, though I think it may have had more to do with bad reaction to the single ‘Go’ featuring Blood Diamonds. While not a bad song, ‘Go’ seemed to give off the feeling that any relevant electronic artist could have created the track. It had the Grimes feel, but not enough of it. Even though she scrapped it, we’ve been fortunate to hear more from the ‘lost’ album. ‘REALiTi’ does that which ‘Go’ did not. It has a classic Grimes…

An Interview with Sanae of Moon Duo
First thingʼs first, have you had a chance to check out the McDonaldʼs food truck? I heard something about how they were trying to get people to play for free and that they didnʼt have a budget to pay anyone. Thatʼs insane. Like the Taco Bell food truck wasnʼt insulting enough. Right. A lot of your recordings seem to have taken place in very isolated pristine and pure conditions like Colorado. How do you cope with that experience to the polar opposite conditions of playing to a hectic consumerist environment like SXSW? Recording in places like home in Colorado or Portland gives us the mental space…

The Rashita Joneses are TAKING OVAAAA
Killer Garage Punk band “The Rashita Joneses” (Milwaukee,WI) well known for their love of every thing loud and trashy, are tearing up the scene after just dropping their debut s/t EP this March. Sporting locally drawn cover art the EP screams lo-fi through the gnarly, sketchy creation by artist Jacqueline Joyce (www.jaquelinejoyce.com). Recorded DIY in the unfinished basement of (drummer) Shamus’es home in Milwaukee,WI the 4 track banger was released March 10th 2015. Punk, psychadelic, grunge? Featuring their single “Mosquito” as the first track the EP holds a raw nature all to ready to be called any of these things. Babbling April: A Record Full of Drive and Nostalgia
Upon listening to Babbling April’s self-titled EP, I couldn’t help but immediately play it through once again after the album had ended. Babbling April’s infectious indie-pop-meets-shoegaze ambience takes the listener for a blissful whirlwind of unique sound and euphoric nostalgia. Stemming from Dayton, Ohio, the band meticulously blends in aspects of building soundscapes, energetic drum beats and soaring vocals, and mellow instrumentation. Babbling April’s first single off their EP, “Sunny Day Records”, stirs up memories of carefree days in weather turned warmer, an anthemic toast to young lovers everywhere. Says Dave New of “Sunny Day Records”, “[t]he song is inherently nostalgic, a memory of the excitement of feeling…
Artist Spotlight: Cary Fagan
Where I’m From: Born in Phoenix, Arizona. What kind of equipment do you use? I have a variety of cameras but recently I’ve been fascinated by the Yashica T3, and my Konica AF. Do you seek out inspiration or does it come naturally to you? I seek it all the time. It comes and goes, but it doesn’t pour out of me daily. I think I am most inspired when I am shooting in the moment, or if I am in love with something, or i come across a foreign film. Best Experience(s): Probably shooting out of country for the first time since taking photography more…
