Ak’chamel: A Mysterious Collective
Ak’chamel, The Giver of Illness, are a music collective based out of Texas. Blending together audio and visual elements in textured shadows and overlaps, they aim to stimulate your senses in the most haunting and surreal way. Their most recent project, “My Form Has Been Extinguished”, is a 60 minute VHS film that follows “a faceless shaman who becomes engaged in a cosmic quest to incarnate the primordial spirits of destruction and chaos present in the universe from the beginning of time.” In keeping their identity immaculately hidden, they add an extra layer to their mysterious and psychedelic aura, both on screen and off. What made you want…
Ariel Pink’s pom pom
Ariel Pink returns with his signature unconventional, psychedelic, muted-pop sound in his latest album. pom pom is overflowing with 17 tracks and lasts for 68 minutes, by far Ariel Pink’s most ambitious album yet. One could say this is his masterpiece, his coup de grâce. What sets pom pom apart from his other two Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti albums, aside from having a lot more music on one record, is that his sound is much brighter and seemingly more “normal” as far as pop music goes. I only say “normal” because Ariel Pink’s music is still as crazy and nonsensical as ever. Songs can transition from an electronic…
Broods’ Evergreen Album Review
Georgia and Caleb Nott are the brother – sister duo that are not only known for topping the charts as #1 in New Zealand and their work with Lorde’s producer, but for their international fame that has succumed the electro pop meets meets indie sound. Debuting with ‘Bridges’ and infatuating the ears of all who listen, Broods unleashes another album, Evergreen, that make us far more madly in love with this duo then we are already. Starting with ‘Mother & Father’ the duo wastes no time in captivating the ears with a psychedelic sound of Georgia and the foot stomping beat that ultimately makes me swift my head to…

Rum and Coke / Vodka / Kahlua / White Wine
I never imagined I’d find myself lost on the outskirts of Boston at 8 AM on a Saturday morning. I had gotten lost because I’d tried to walk home and veered off into the wrong direction. I’d tried to walk home because I was too nauseous to get on the train. I was too nauseous to get on the train because I’d been puking since 6 AM. I’d been puking since 6 AM because the night before I’d ingested two rum and Cokes, one vodka mixer, several glasses of Kahlua and half a bottle of white wine. I’m feeling a little puke-y just thinking about it. I’d arrived late to…
Seashells: A Short in Beauty and Nostalgia
Although no one’s experience is identical to another, I think we can all agree that growing up is hella weird. And sometimes sad, embarrassing, and confusing. But in looking back upon the saddest, most embarrassing, and most confusing times, you realize that these once Earth-shattering moments are really just blips in a life that came to be full of all sorts of sad, embarrassing and confusing things (plus some good stuff too). When you’re a grown-up, or at least a little closer to becoming one, it’s hard to remember how you felt when you realized that your days of playing with Barbies and drinking Kool-Aid with your friends after…

dubJproductions and ANON Magazine’s Mixtape Release Party Review
Last Wednesday night brought together an indie-pop-rock-psychedelic cast of Austin and Houston-based bands at the infamous The Mohawk on Red River Street. Despite the prolonged drizzly weather, an impressive crowd showed up early and stayed to show their support for all four musical acts. The Mixtape Release Party show came to fruition thanks to a collaboration between dubJproductions and ANON Magazine who helped promote and arrange the fantastic line-up for the show. Despite their recent formation and Wednesday’s show being only their third live performance to date, On Delay put on a solid set to start the night. Pulling from psychedelic influences, Dieter Geisler’s soaring vocal range was impressive…

My Top Five Recent Albums
Ruins by Grouper Grouper’s newly released album Ruins will undoubtebly give you chills at one point or another throughout the eight track record. The album features a mix of dark, soul wrenching songs that are bound to draw emotion out of the listener. Ruins‘ first single “Call Across Rooms” may be the most soul wrenching of all songs on the record, leaving the listener with a dark feeling of solidarity. Faith In Strangers by Andy Stott Andy Stott’s new album takes the listener on an industrial electronic journey similar to his last record Luxury Problems. The result is another pleasing and unique album, with even more audible experimental…

20 Questions With The Designer Behind Jas MB
This summer, our EIC spent some time hanging out with possibly the friendliest designer to grace this planet, also known as Jas Sehmbi. He is not only a leather goods designer for his label Jas MB, but also creates and distributes leather to many of the great British designers (like Kei Kagami, for starters). In addition to that, he’s a DJ, a friend of Kanye and the Beckhams, an entrepreneur, a believer of peace and freedom, and sooooo much more. So, despite the distance and weird time differences, Jas took the time to talk with us about life, fashion, music and more! See below>>> 1. So, I’m going to…
Steve Gunn Presents: Way Out Weather
Steve Gunn’s Way Out Weather starts with a title track that makes the album sound like a typical Americana album with soaring steel-guitar style playing and finger picked acoustic. During my fourth listen, I began to truly appreciate the wealth of musical information and depth that a few tracks from this album provide. Wildwood, the second track, freshens things up with an occasional 7/4 meter, which is somehow as smooth as it is jarring. Generally, Gunn’s guitar work is ethereal and free, almost as if he’s playing a sitar rather than a guitar. Repetition is a huge part of this album, which can be viewed as a negative at times…
