You all know what I’m talking about. Everyone has those songs that remind them of their ex-significant others, or they simply remind them of the dark and dismal single life that they lead.

Aside from every single Taylor Swift song ever written, here are 5 songs that you should under no circumstances listen to on the big V-Day if you fall under the category of single:

“Good In Goodbye”Carrie Underwood

This is probably one of the most gut-wrenching breakup anthems that she has ever written. With lyrics such as, “As bad as it was, as bad as it hurt, I thank God I didn’t get what I thought that I deserved,” listening to that is sure to be a slap in the face to your confidence on a day where you are trying very, very, ridiculously hard to keep your composure. You don’t want to be seething over your ex as the person in the cubical next to you gets roses hand delivered to their desk.

“Wonderwall” Ryan Adams

Woah, talk about throwback on that one, right? With the slow, acoustic, coffee shop in the winter feel, you will inevitably close your eyes and begin to tear up at your life if your iTunes randomly lands on this one.  “I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me; and after all, you’re my wonderwall…” Hmm…sounds like a recipe for grabbing that bottle of wine and The Notebook DVD and lying in bed wheezing about how you don’t have your own Ryan Gosling or Rachel McAdams.

“Poison & Wine”The Civil Wars

I’m pretty sure that I have cried to this song even when my life was in a state of pure joy. There is something about the aesthetic of this song, including lyrics such as “I don’t love you, but I always will,” that brings you into a very somber mood thinking about that ex that you’ll always secretly have feelings for. Do you really think that listening to this will bring them back? No. Naturally, that is something that you should be avoiding on Valentine’s Day, unless you’re just really into masochism…but your name isn’t Rihanna, is it?

“Stolen”Dashboard Confessional

Let’s be honest, does that one even really need a description? You remember in middle school when this song was probably the deepest song you had ever heard, and all it says is “You have stolen my heart.” As a 20-something, I might as well just say that this song is still as relatable now as it was when everyone had acne and braces. Face it, you’re not going to be walking on the beach with the O.C. sunset feeling like you are infinite. Judge me, I don’t even care. Just don’t listen to this song, K?

“Someone Like You”Adele
Come on, you should know not to listen to that simply because of the title. I don’t even need to cite lyrics from this song, simply because it’s too blatantly obvious for a description, and the fact that it has been deemed “The #1 Song To Commit Suicide To.” The fact of the matter is, you lost them. It’s time to move on, because life isn’t going to stop for you just because you miss your ex. If all else fails, at least make Valentine’s Day all about YOU. Go out there and LIVE. Or, if you’re still too depressed, put on your fat pants and eat a lot of chocolate or drink a bottle of wine until you pass out….maybe I’m the one that has problems….
